Types of Pheromones

Basically, the natural kingdom has the following types of pheromones:

  • Releaser -This is responsible for sexual attraction; however, people who are attracted to the same sex react differently to releaser pheromones.
  • Primer -These pheromones don’t act as quickly. Usually, they affect you over the course of your life from puberty to menopause.
  • Signaler – How a baby is able to recognize the scent of his or her mother is an example of signaler pheromones.
  • Modulator -These pheromones impact body functions. They are an example of how female menstrual cycles can synchronize.

These chemicals can also calm you down. In addition, they might change from comforting to romantic. It is also believed that tears have a chemical that decreases male arousal. This theory was actually tested. When male participants saw tears, this took their mind off of romance. In addition, actual tears were put under their noses during testing, but they didn’t know it.   They were then compared to other controlled groups. So, these men not only responded to the thought of crying, but also to something in the tears.

Another study was conducted with both gay and heterosexual men. It was proven that they reacted differently to shorts worn by various subjects. When tested with regular body scents, the heterosexual men preferred the shirts worn by women. Gay men, on the other hand, chose shirts worn by other gay men. During each of these tests, no one knew who wore what shirt. What did this prove? Basically, people are attracted to certain scents more than others.

More research will be done in the future, and this will lead to more valuable information. Hopefully, scientists will find all pheromones and learn how they get certain responses. You would think if humans behave like insects, we would have solid evidence of this by now. But this just means that humans are more complex, exciting and challenging.

The first evidence that humans produced and reacted to pheromones was cited in a journal called Nature.
